October 20, 2023: University of the Pacific’s

Reynolds Gallery is pleased to present powell art: personal marks.

The show turns the scholarly and personal lenses of four Powell Scholars on art from the Robert and Jeannette Powell collection. The exhibition features seven pieces from the Powell’s gift to the University in conversation with interpretive projects created by the scholar curators and is on view until November 24, 2023.

Using frameworks from their own disciplines and interests, Powell Scholars Leah Brent, Imani Jaldin-Hartsough, Josephine Kinlan, and Emily Padilla have created novel interpretations to help visitors better understand and appreciate the art. The curators are in dialog with prints, paintings, and sculpture by Jasper Johns, Sam Francis, Jake Berthot, Ruth Rippon, Wayne Thiebaud, and Joe Draegert as well as each other, creating intersectional meaning through contrast and continuity.

This exhibition was produced in collaboration with University Curator Lisa Cooperman, the Department of Art, Media, Performance, and Design, and the ongoing support of the Powell Advisory Board.

The university community is cordially invited to an opening reception on October 26, from 6 - 8pm. Refreshments and short remarks by student curators are on the menu. Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 am–4:30 pm. The Reynolds Gallery is in the Jeannette Powell Art Center on the campus of the University of the Pacific at 1071 W. Mendocino Ave. in Stockton.
